“No one comes to know himself through introspection, or in the solitude of his personal diary. Rather, it is in dialogue, in his meeting with other persons. It is only by expressing his convictions to others that he becomes really conscious of them. He who would see himself clearly must open up to a confidant freely chosen and worthy of such trust.”

Training, Experience, & Practice
Laura M. Northrop Orme, PhD, is a licensed psychologist, in private practice, in Texas. She completed her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Biola University’s Rosemead School of Psychology in La Mirada, CA. Before pursuing her doctorate, Dr. Orme completed a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy and Counseling (2006) from Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS).
After completing her Master’s degree (and prior to pursuing her PhD), Dr. Orme worked at a community mental health clinic providing therapeutic services for children and adults. While acquiring her PhD, Dr. Orme trained in an array of settings, including Biola Counseling Center, Harbor UCLA Medical Center, and Patton State Hospital, an inpatient forensic psychiatric hospital. Her pre-doctoral training was completed at the VA Gulf Coast, and her post-doctoral training was completed at the Long Beach VA, where she focused on the psychosocial recovery of severe mental illness. Prior to entering into private practice, she worked as an Assistant Professor with Baylor College of Medicine (2017-2019), where she provided clinical services at Ben Taub Hospital, including: outpatient therapy and personality/cognitive evaluations in the Neuropsychiatric Center; Inpatient services, and supervision of Psychology Fellows at Ben Taub Hospital; and consultation and liaison service at Quentin Mease Community Hospital.
Dr. Orme currently enjoys working with individuals, couples, and families. She commonly works with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, shame, identity development, health related stress/adjustment, spirituality, spiritual development and struggle, and life transition challenges, including college adjustment, motherhood, and parenting related issues. Her competencies also include personality and cognitive assessment. Dr. Orme’s treatment approach is collaborative, relational, and evidence-informed. Her treatment approach is rooted in attachment and psychodynamic theory, and she draws upon other evidence-based interventions (e.g., Mentalization, Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Emotion Focused Therapy) to help her clients build insight and take practical steps towards change.
